Surgeons, is there a surgical procedure that is comparable to this?
In pottery, to connect two pieces of clay, you make small scratches all over the two surfaces and then press them together. Is there a comparable surgical procedure? For example, if an open wound was not stitched at first and scar tissue began to form, would you ‘roughen’ or exfoliate the tissue before stitching it? Or if a patient reopened a scar, like from an old incision, would you do anything with the edges to make it a fresh wound so that when stitched it would heal properly?

I’m NOT a surgeon, but there is a reason doctors use such SHARP scalpels. A ‘clean’ incision, one that doesn’t have ragged edges, heals faster and nicer than a ragged one. Flesh meld quicker and cleaner when the surfaces are as flush as possible, it’s also the reason a dull knife is far more dangerous than a sharp one in the kitchen. Sharp cuts heal better than ripped ones… I know this from experience working with knives in a restaurant for years… had plenty of little cuts that by 2 days are almost gone, but had a couple of ‘tear’ type cuts from broken glass in the garbage that just healed ugly as hell.
As well, when a scar forms, doctors cut out the scar tissue and make clean surfaces… plastic surgery is all about that.
